Implementation Of Literacy Programme

In West Bengal, the Department of Mass Education Extension plays a pivotal role in the implementation of various literacy programmes. To provide administrative, technical and other support, West Bengal State Literacy Mission (WBSLMA) has been set up by the State Govt. WBSLA is thus entrusted to implement the current literacy programme, Saakshar Bharat in 9 (nine) districts of the State.

It is a settled fact literacy is one of the major indicators of socio-economic progress but even after implementation of successive 5-year plans the problem of illiteracy across the country, particularly among the women and the people belonging to the SC, ST and minority communities, has continued to impede the progress of society and development  initiatives. To combat this problem, the Government of India launched Saakshar Bhara on 8th September, 2009 with the National Literacy Mission Authority under the Ministry of Human Resource Development as the nodal authority to implement the programme.
