It has been rendering following Library Services -

  • Book lending Services

    Membership is necessary only for this section. One has to keep a security deposit of Rs.250/- or Rs. 500/-. No other charges in connection with membership is required. Filled in application in prescribed form are to be submitted with duly signed along with two recent photographs (stamp size), one residence proof document [Voter ID card, Ration card Telephone bill etc., In case of child member no deposit is required. Maximum two nos. of books may be taken on loan. Full catalogue can be seen at the Library computer and website. At present our Book lending services is made through computer software application.

  • Reading Room Service

    No Membership is required to use this section of the Library, only to put name &, address in the register book. This section is located in 3 rd floor. This section has an accommodation of 150 persons at a time.

  • Career Guidance Services

    Students, jobseekers, people from different walks of life who are in search of different careers can have their desirable books/document in these sections. Books on various Competitive Exams like IAS, WBCS, SSC, clerkship are available. Many students have got jobs. One can get the books from the shelf himself/ herself. Catalogue/ Library staff assistances are also available.

  • News Paper and Magazine/ Journal section

    This section is in the ground floor with a seating capacity of 40 persons while news paper reading is to be made standing position, now about 10 types of news papers in Bengali, Hindi and Urdu are available and about 94 nos. of magazines/ journals - both Indian and Foreign publication are available. Any body can read on writing his/ her name, address with signature in a register.

  • Children Section

    Children upto the age of 16 can become a member. No fee is being charged from children members. Only a certificate from the Headmaster/Headmistress is necessary. At present this section has an accommodation of 50 users at a time.

  • Services to Visually Impaired Persons

    State Central Library has a separate section for visually impaired persons. It is run with the help of a voluntary organization — Society for Visually Handicapped. There is reading facility of blind students. Braille Books and Talking Books are being made in the Library itself for aspiring students of higher education, the Library prepare such books. The students may avail the facility of Postal service free of cost. More than 150 students are using the Facility of this section. This section is situated in the ground floor. Braille Section of the State Central Library renders its services in collaboration with the Society for Visually Handicapped.

  • Photocopy services

    This service is available on payment of rate as specified by the government, between 11 AM to 4 PM on payment at the cash section. In case of Photocopy, there is a limit maximum 30 pages or one third of a publication/ book whichever is lower. Full copy is not allowed.

  • Central monitoring Cell

    All district libraries were provided with computer hardware, Software in a phased manner. And networking of the district libraries with the State central Library is also completed. Now, creations of database of the books are being done in the district libraries. Further we have 170 Town Libraries in our computerized network.

    We have introduced our web portal in the name of and it is monitored from State Central Library. A lot of server and other accessories has been introduced to monitor all the computer activities of our networked libraries, in this cell.

  • Book Processing Section

    Computer system was introduced in State Central Library in the year 1996. It was used at that time only for some preliminary works and computer awareness among the staff. Present computer system installed in the year 2005. At present catalogouing of all Books in the library has been completed. It is not only available in State Central Library computer but also available in the web OPAC section of our portal Catalogouing and updating of database is continuing process and is going on.

  • Permanent Computer Training Lab

    Permanent Training Lab has been estd. in State Central Library to train existing Library people. Person of District Libraries, Town Libraries and Rural Libraries are facilitating in this centre. People are being trained with Library Hardware and Software both Libsys and KOHA. These are immense helpful to promote fruitful computerized network in our State.

  • Digitisation of Rare Books

    Due to this digitization, the problem of getting the pages damaged is over. Another significant advantage of the digitization is that many people form around the world and remote places can get the access of the books/ publications. We are performing the job in association with CDAC.

    The state Central Library started this section with the help of 2 number of scanners and computers. In the meantime, no of scanned books has crossed 30,000 and about 1 crore 25 Lakhs pages have been scanned. At present 20,000 books are available in our website. Work is going on for Uploading another 10,000 books soon.

  • Meeting Room

    Meeting Room Inaugurated by Honbl’e MIC Janab Abdul Karim Chowdhury on 29th January 2015 at State Central Library.


    Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation is a central autonomous organization established and fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This organization functions as a promotional agency, an advisory and consultancy organization, a funding body for public library development in India. The Foundation works in close association and active cooperation with different State Governments. And Union Territory Administrations through a machinery called State Library Planning Committee (SLPC/SLC) set up in each State at the instance of the Foundation.

    'West Bengal State Committee for Implementation of RRRLF Program' under the chairmanship of Hon'ble Minister of State in charge of Mass Education Extension Department and Library Services Department discharges its function from State Central Library. Kolkata. Various development schemes from matching and non-matching fund [as indicated in the website of RRRLF] are to reach the office of the State Central Library within November of each year, through the concerned District Library Officer for onward disbursement.
